In a recent interview, trade veteran Taran Adarsh said that the trailer was good, however, the promotions of the film weren’t optimum. Deva had the potential to work better than Shahid’s last two films but due to lack of momentum, the numbers weren’t as expected.
Deva was a remake of the 2013 Malayalam-language film Mumbai Police. However, none of the makers accepted it.

Taran talked about how the film had many loose ends. While the remake can make changes, Deva lacked the shock value that was in the original film.
That was not it. Shahid Kapoor was also a reason for the letdown.
Shahid hasn’t delivered a Rs. 100 crore plus grosser except for Padmaavat and Kabir Singh.
Trade Analysts say that if the actor is demanding a high amount, he should also deliver according to that.
Shahid hasn’t been able to excel in romantic, action or sports films. He doesn’t even have a good eye for films as well. Because of this, he lacks a set image which results in people coming to the cinema depending on the hype of the film, not for his stardom.
