will-kajol-maa-break-into-the-club-of-female-led-blockbusters

The buzz around Kajol’s upcoming horror film Maa is steadily growing. The film has already caught attention on platforms like BookMyShow and is being called a spiritual successor to the Shaitaan universe.

Directed by Vishal Furia, Maa is set to ride the recent wave of horror hits in Bollywood, following successful releases like Munjya and Shaitaan. The trailer has received a positive response, and Kajol’s return to the big screen, especially after a few underwhelming performances, has added to the curiosity.

But the real test for Maa won’t be in the hype, but in how it performs at the box office. The top five highest-grossing opening day numbers for female-led Bollywood films are currently held by Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, and Kangana Ranaut, with Tanu Weds Manu Returns earning Rs. 8.7 crore on its first day.

For Maa to break into this group, it will need to surpass that number. Early projections place its opening day collection in the Rs. 6–8 crore range. There’s still hope, if the audience response and reviews are strong, it could draw bigger footfalls through word-of-mouth.

However, competition from other releases and the unpredictable nature of horror in Indian cinema may pose challenges. If Maa succeeds, it won’t just mark a strong comeback for Kajol, it could also shift how the industry views female-led horror films.

But to truly shake things up and make history, the film will need to go beyond expectations and challenge the benchmarks set by the likes of Kareena, Alia, and Kangana.
