Gladiator II

The official trailer for Gladiator II just had a hit on YouTube and reactions are hilarious! Fans of the original 2000 epic are outraged. The very Reason? This sequel was unnecessary and a pathetic attempt to cash in on the legacy of a film that ended perfectly.

Hans Zimmer’s score for the original Gladiator was legit. The audience couldn’t stop themselves from getting into the world of music; It was perfectly noticed that people were in tears and men humming ‘Now We Are Free’ when they left the theatre. But, the new trailer’s music feels like the choice is baffling and seems to disrespect the musical legacy that contributed significantly to the original’s impact.

Modern movie trailers often reveal too much, and Gladiator II is no exception. It felt like the trailer is a 3-minute summary of the entire film, leaving little to the imagination. One of the most criticized aspects of the trailer is Denzel Washington’s portrayal of an ancient Roman. With his New York accent, Denzel seems to be playing a version of himself rather than a character fitting the historical context. This casting choice leads to moments that feel more like “Rome: Modern American Issues Edition” than a continuation of the Gladiator legacy.

The filmmakers missed an opportunity to build on the original’s narrative in a meaningful way.

The reaction to the trailer is not just negative partially but on the whole. Fans who cherished the original Gladiator are laughing out on disappointment loudly, convinced that Ridley Scott must have been drunk when he decided to greenlight this sequel. The iconic phrase “Are you not entertained?” from the original now feels like a haunting question to the audience, to which the answer is a resounding “No.”
