Although Vijay Sethupathi is mainly a Tamil actor, he enjoys a strong fan base across different languages—especially among Telugu audiences.
Last year, Vijay Sethupathi starred in Maharaja. Although the film didn’t generate much buzz before its Telugu release, it gained popularity after hitting theaters with exceptional reviews. The film also gained a lot of appreciation on OTT platforms.

Riding on that success, many expected his next film, Ace, to perform well too. However, it was released with little to no promotion and failed to build any anticipation. Maybe Vijay and the makers already knew that they had a dud under their belt and didn’t hype it much.
Unlike Maharaja, Ace lacked a compelling storyline or engaging narrative. Viewers felt the makers relied solely on Vijay Sethupathi’s name without delivering meaningful content.

It’s a disappointing result for Kannada heroine Rukmini Vasanth, who made her Tamil debut with Ace. Her character was pretty flat in the film, with no emotional or dramatic range.
Directed by Arumuga Kumar, the film followed a routine plot and ended up being dull and disappointing.

Due to weak story, poor execution, and zero buzz, Ace failed to attract audiences. In many Telugu theaters, shows were canceled because of low occupancy.
It’s clear the makers tried to capitalize on the goodwill earned by Maharaja to promote Ace. But that strategy didn’t work this time. Audiences are intelligent, and they can smell a good film from a long distance.
They have become more selective, especially when the industry is already struggling with low box office returns.
