Hyderabad residents and flight enthusiasts are up for a treat as ‘Rajiv Gandhi International Airport’ gears up to get a second runway and another runway, owing to the increasing number of passengers.

Air passenger traffic is growing day by day, already having reached the 3-crore mark and well on the way to reaching 4.5 crores by 2030.

Increased air travel demands in a post-pandemic world have led to massive congestion during peak hours.

This has also created problems of long queues for security checks, check-ins and immigration, causing discomfort to travellers by eating up their time.

This expansion aims to address several issues persisting after the previous ones like lack of seating facilities and food outlets.

The lack of parking space has also created a lot of struggle, forcing passengers to either park in distant areas or wait in long never-ending queues to get a spot at the airport.

SGK Kishore, the Executive Director (South) and Chief Innovation Officer of GMR Airports came forward to say that the new terminal will handle 4.5 crore passenger traffic by 2030.

Making a bold statement, he claimed that the goal of the airport is to reach 10 crore passengers, with an increase in flight movements from the current 43 to 55 in the next few years.

The AI-enabled digital platform and the Airport Predictive Operation Centre (APOC) were inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu on Wednesday.




With multiple stakeholders involved in the expansion, the public is eager to observe the final outcome upon completion.
