Nara Lokesh

Today in the Council, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh answered a Question about the English Medium in the Schools and TOEFL Training for Students from Class III.

This is a sensitive topic. During Jagan’s rule, TDP insisted on giving options to the parents and student regarding the Telugu and English Mediums. The party insisted on parents having a choice to choose their medium of interest so as to save the Mother Tongue.

Back then, Jagan tried to project TDP as anti-poor and used to say the party would not want poor kids to study in English and become competitive.

Now in power, Lokesh handled the question with grace and caution.

“We are not against English Medium. We know the importance of our kids learning English to compete with the World today. At the same time, they should not struggle to speak in Mother Tongue like me. Some mistakes are creeping in my speeches even today. It is important that we do not forget our mother tongue. It is crucial to save our mother tongue. We are not resorting to doing things in hurry. We will review completely and will come up with an action plan in 100 days,” Lokesh said.

Being in power, Lokesh can easily speak against Jagan’s policies and can reverse all the decisions.

But then, he did not do so. He did not take a decision and only promised to come back with an action plan.

Also, he brought a certain degree of sensitivity to the topic by including himself as an example to stress the importance of learning mother tongue.

He can avoid talking about his flaws but then, little things like that will make things easily understandable.

If a leader gives his own flaw as an example to the topic, it only indicates how serious he is about the issue and will also rob his opponents of any opportunity to talk lightly.

Such instances are very rare in Telugu politics. We have seen leaders like Jagan still in denial mode even after a colossal defeat.
