Amrita Sher Gil PaintingIndia has been a capital of art for a very long time, and the recent auctions of Indian artifacts prove this fact. India has gifted the world a lot of great painters, including Raja Ravi Verma, MF Husain, Rabindranath Thakur, Jamini Roy, and Amrita Sher-Gil.

In this list, the last one has just made a record by becoming the artist of the most expensive painting by any Indian painter. She now breaks the record set by ‘Gestation’ by Sayed Haider Raza, which raised 51.75 crores at the beginning of this month.

Sher-Gil’s painting The Story Teller, signed and dated 1937, fetched a staggering ₹61.8 crore.

Sher-Gil has been the most successful female artist for a very long time and even set a record for the costliest painting in the past. In 2006, her painting “Village Group” was sold for 6.9 crores, which was a record at that time.

Amrita Sher-Gil was a remarkable artist who bridged cultures through her unique blend of Western and Indian influences. Her paintings, capturing the essence of rural life and the human experience, continue to resonate globally.
