A new so-called “holy dip” service at Mahakumbh 2025 is charging ₹500 to perform a ritual that many are calling outright fraud. The service claims that by dipping a photocopy of a devotee’s picture into the sacred Triveni Sangam, their sins will be washed away. Even if they’re not physically present.

Promotional material urges people not to “miss their last chance” for blessings, calling Mahakumbh a “once-in-144-years opportunity.” It even claims that the ritual will bring divine favor from ancestors watching from above.
Many are outraged by what they see as blatant religious profiteering. Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde mocked the concept, jokingly asking if sending a photocopy of ₹500 would have the same effect. Others have called it a scam, preying on people’s beliefs. One commenter asked, “Where is it written that sins can be erased this way? This is just a way to make money off people’s faith.”

Some services are even offering to send customers “holy soil” from the riverbed, with video proof of the so-called purification ritual. Critics argue that blind faith is being exploited for profit, turning religious devotion into a business. It is advised to not fall prey to such schemes that revel in the commercialization of faith.
