India opened its medal tally right on the third day of the Paris Olympics 2024. 22-year-old Manu Bhaker secured a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event held today.
Manu became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal in shooting. She was just 0.1 behind runner-up Kim Yeji, who won the silver medal. Oh Ye Jin claimed the gold medal in the event. Both Oh Ye Jin and Kim Yeji are from the Republic of Korea.

Three years ago, Manu Bhaker suffered heartbreak as her pistol malfunctioned at the women’s final event at the Tokyo Olympics. She had a sensational redemption by winning the medal this time.
In the qualification round held on the first day, Manu Bhaker secured third position women’s 10m air pistol event by scoring 580 points. By qualifying for the final, she became the first woman shooter in the last 20 years to reach the Olympic final in an individual event.

Back in the 2004 Athens Olympics, Suma Shirur qualified for the 10m air rifle event final but couldn’t secure a medal.
Manu Bhaker became the fifth Indian shooter to secure an Olympic Medal, after Abhinav Bindra (Gold -Men’s 10m air rifle, 2008), Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (Silver – Men’s double trap, 2004), Vijay Kumar (Silver – Men’s 25m rapid fire pistol, 2004) and Gagan Narang (Bronze – Men’s 10m air rifle, 2012).
