Immediately after this decision, there was an outcry that Gambhir is trying to demolish Dhoni’s legacy by dropping CSK captain Ruturaj from the national team.
However, this wouldn’t have mattered much had Gambhir shown the results. But shockingly for him, India lost the very first T20 game they played under Gambhir’s stint as the coach. This was followed by an ODI series loss against Sri Lanka which happened for the first time in the last 28 years.

This has now led to a talk that Gambhir might have perhaps made a big mistake by dropping CSK’s Ruturaj who is not just becoming a skilled captain but also a potent player.
Gaikwad is blessed with natural playmaking abilities and could have molded into a fine anchor player like Virat Kohli for the national side. But Gambhir was least bothered about this prospect and he decided not to encourage the talented youngster.

Picking players like Shivam Dubey and Washington Sundar ahead of Ruturaj has led to a wide commotion now and understandably so. The only way Gambhir can get out of this mess is by delivering consistent results with the series against New Zealand, South Africa and Australia later this year.
