For a while now, there have been varied speculations about the number of retentions that could be permitted in the coming edition of IPL. There’s a huge update on the same now.

Incidentally, Punjab’s IPL handle earlier shared a snap of their retentions and quickly deleted the photo.

The observation in this deleted photo is that we could see only 5 players in the retention list issued by Punjab.

This pretty much confirms that only 5 retentions are permitted for IPL 2025. This busts the speculation that there could be six or even seven retentions for the coming edition.

Notably, Chennai Super Kings had been looking for six retentions to make it easier for them to retain MS Dhoni as an uncapped player. But that doesn’t appear to be the case this time around.

If the final retentions list is locked at 5, it has to be seen which all players the leading sides in the tournament would keep ahold of.




Coming to Mumbai Indians, it is nearly confirmed that Rohit Sharma is moving to a new team. There are reports that KKR also has approached Surya Kumar Yadav to captain the side. If these two stalwarts quit, Mumbai could be in big trouble.
