Though he has not captained a Test match, Gill is not new to leadership. He captained Gujarat Titans in 2024 IPL and impressed fans and analysts alike.
Leading in IPL is different from Test cricket but Gill’s calm and composed nature suggests he can guide India in the long run.
Selectors are looking for a captain with a long term vision for India’s Test cricket. Shubman Gill is the ideal candidate. He has performed under pressure, especially with centuries in Australia, England and South Africa.
He is mature and focused and can lead India’s Test team for years to come. Along with Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant is expected to be the vice captain.
Pant’s aggressive and fearless batting has made him a game changer in Test cricket.
His consistent performances in tough overseas conditions, including centuries in Australia and England make him a key player.
Pant’s leadership potential along with his wicket keeping skills make him a natural choice for the vice captaincy.
Despite being senior, Jasprit Bumrah is not expected to be a leader. Due to fitness issues and uncertainty over his availability for the full series, Bumrah is not in the running for the vice captaincy.
A senior BCCI official said if Bumrah is not in the running for the captaincy, appointing him as vice captain wouldn’t make sense.
This leaves the door open for younger players like Gill and Pant.Shubman Gill is the obvious choice as Test captain.
