Malayalam Film Industry in Crisis

Last year, the Malayalam industry astounded Indian cinema with back-to-back blockbusters across various genres, setting new milestones in collections.

However, the start of this year seems like a major setback for the Malayalam industry. According to reports, out of 17 Malayalam films released in February, only one movie — Officer on Duty — managed to succeed, while the remaining 16 films ended up as disasters.

Additionally, the total budget for these 17 films was around ₹73 crores, but their theatrical returns were only around ₹23.5 crores.

These statistics have shocked Kerala’s film production houses, indicating that the Malayalam industry is now in deep crisis and striving for box office success with upcoming movies.

Following this, trade experts on social media commented that this is just a report for February, and things may improve starting from March. With major releases like L2: Empuraan, which is set to release on March 27th, several big films are already lined up.

However, it remains to be seen whether the Malayalam industry will recover from this huge dip in the coming months.
