Coolie Thug Life

The limited success of Tamil cinema in the Hindi market has often been attributed to the 4-week digital release window.

This has prevented major films like Vikram, Coolie, and LEO from securing spots in National Multiplex Chains like PVR, INOX, and Cinepolis, especially in North India. The Multiplex Association requires an 8-week gap between theatrical and digital releases.

However, there is promising news for Tamil cinema enthusiasts. Two highly anticipated Tamil films of 2025, Kamal Haasan’s Thug Life directed by Mani Ratnam and Rajinikanth’s Coolie directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, are reportedly in discussions to extend the digital release window to 8 weeks.

Sources close to the films have confirmed that both are being planned to release across National Multiplex Chains, aiming to make a significant impact in North India.

This strategy is designed to maximize the films’ theatrical runs before their OTT releases. The release window for Thug Life is expected to be finalized by May 15, while Coolie is still in the process of finalizing the details. If Thug Life adopts this 8-week strategy, it could set a precedent for Coolie.

Lokesh Kanagaraj’s confidence in Coolie’s potential in the Hindi market is evident. His strong belief in the film’s success, along with the 8-week OTT window, showcases the confidence behind the release.

“The way Lokesh Kanagaraj is confident about Rajinikanth’s Coolie in Hindi is unreal and unimaginable,” remarked an insider.

Both films are expected to break box office records, with Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth’s massive fan bases in North India ensuring nationwide attention.

Mani Ratnam and Lokesh Kanagaraj also have significant followings, adding to the excitement. Thug Life is set for release on June 5, 2025, and Coolie will follow on August 14, 2025.

If this strategy proves successful, it could help Tamil cinema establish a stronger presence in the Hindi market, benefiting future Tamil releases in the region.
