Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Coolie is generating significant buzz, especially after some reports revealed that Amazon Prime Video has acquired its digital rights for a record-breaking 120 crores for a Tamil film.
While nothing hasn’t been officially confirmed, it surpasses the 100-crore deal that Prime Video previously paid for Rajinikanth’s Jailer.

Such a massive acquisition highlights the high expectations surrounding Coolie, but it also raises concerns about its theatrical run.
The primary concern stems from the OTT release window. Recent Tamil films like Jailer, The GOAT, and Vettaiyan were released on OTT just four weeks after hitting theaters.

As a result, major multiplex chains like PVR INOX and Cinepolis refused to screen these films in Northern regions due to their strict requirement of an eight-week gap between theatrical and digital releases.
If Coolie follows the same 4-week model, it may face similar rejection from multiplexes, limiting its box office potential in Hindi belts.

This could be a significant blow, as Coolie is designed to appeal to a pan-India audience with a box office potential of 1000 crores.
The film features an impressive cast, including Aamir Khan, Nagarjuna, and Upendra, alongside Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, and Sathyaraj in key roles. Additionally, Pooja Hegde will appear in a special dance number, further enhancing the film’s appeal across regions.
Given Coolie’s pan-India potential, the makers will have to carefully decide on the OTT release strategy. If Prime Video insists on an early OTT release to maximize its huge investment, it could hurt the film’s theatrical earnings.
However, if the makers manage to maintain the 8-week window, Coolie could achieve strong results in both theatrical and OTT platforms.
Meanwhile, earlier rumors suggested a clash between Coolie and Hrithik Roshan-Jr. NTR’s War 2, but recent updates indicate that the two films will avoid releasing on the same date.
With Lokesh Kanagaraj at the helm and Rajinikanth playing a character with negative shades, Coolie has all the elements to be a major box office hit — provided the right decisions are made regarding its release strategy.
