Marakkar, King of Kotha, Empuraan OTT Deals

Mohanlal’s highly anticipated sequel to Lucifer, titled L2: Empuraan and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, was released in theaters on March 27th and has received mixed responses from audiences.

Despite the reviews, L2: Empuraan has emerged as the highest-grossing Malayalam movie and has performed exceptionally well at the Kerala box office.

However, Empuraan’s post-theatrical digital and satellite rights deals weren’t up to expectations. According to the list of top post-theatrical digital and satellite deals in Mollywood, L2: Empuraan secured the third position.

The second position was acquired by Dulquer Salmaan’s King of Kotha, and the first position was held by Mohanlal’s Marakkar, released in 2021. Despite these massive post-theatrical deals, both movies ended up as box office disasters.

At the same time, the recently released L2: Empuraan is considered an average hit. While it has collected around ₹250 crores worldwide, it was made with a massive budget and required a gross collection of approximately ₹300 crores worldwide to achieve hit status, but it failed.

Despite acquiring the top positions in post-theatrical digital and satellite deals in Mollywood, all three movies fell short of expectations and ended up as theatrical failures.
