The government revealed in the parliament that Indian nationals received a significant 72.3% of all H1-B visas issued by the US in the fiscal year 2023. This staggering number shows how much US employers rely on the community.

For years, Indian professionals have powered Silicon Valley, keeping American companies ahead in technology, engineering, and healthcare. Yet, visa policies remain unpredictable in the new Trump era and people are living in fear of being kicked out.
The Indian government claims it is actively engaging with the US to keep opportunities open. However, the new US president seems stubborn with his “America First” approach and his aggressive actions against immigrants including the recent deportation of 104 Indians.

Critics argue that Indian workers forced to return home will not only affect their livelihood but will also be a massive hit for the US firms who are reliant on them. SMEs and start-ups can also risk being shut down due to this major shift in the talent pool.
For now, the number looks good, but the Indian government needs to be stringent and demand clarity from the US to ensure the safety of their workers.
