NRI Techie Salary Not Enough

A recent video featuring an Indian-origin techie discussing his salary of $115,000 (about ₹70 lakh) in Canada has sparked debate on social media about the high cost of living in Toronto.

The techie, in a clip shared by entrepreneur Piyush Monga, said that earning over $110,000 isn’t as great as it sounds. He talked about how expensive life in Toronto is.

He mentioned that nearly $3,000 (around ₹2,51,130) of his salary goes just for rent.

When asked about his income, he said, “Upwards of $100,000, but that is not enough nowadays, especially if you live downtown.”

Some humorous remarks in the comments section of the video added a lighter tone to the serious discussion about salaries and living costs.

“I feel your pain! I’m earning less than you, but my rent is even higher!”
“Brother, you should just move to a cheaper city! Toronto is for tourists, not for saving money!”
“Guess he should start a YouTube channel about being broke while making six figures!”
“Welcome to adulthood! Where $100,000 just buys you stress and bills!”

Many social media users also shared their own experiences and opinions on the high cost of living in the city.

One commenter advised the techie to consider changing companies to increase his earnings. They pointed out that intra-company transfers, common in service-oriented companies, often do not result in substantial salary increases in either the U.S. or Canada.

One user argued that people often feel unsatisfied with their earnings, no matter the amount. They emphasized that living in Canada is significantly better than in India, even under current circumstances.
