Thousands of Indians in the US have been buying desi clothes and gilt jewelry through WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook sellers from India. What once felt like an easy way to shop has now turned into a legal headache.
The US authorities have started watching shipments from India closely. They have imposed customs duties on these items, especially those brought in personally or sold informally through apps and social media.

If customs aren’t paid, the item is marked as an illegal import. As a result, buyers are being fined and in some cases, even sent legal notices.
Many small Indian sellers, including Telugus, are running such informal businesses online. They buy from India, sell through Instagram or WhatsApp, and skip customs entirely. But now, both sellers and buyers are on the radar.

The Telugu Association of North America (TANA) has issued a clear warning: Avoid buying clothes, jewelry, or food items from social media sellers unless you want trouble with customs.
Even casual parcels from visiting relatives like pickles, snacks, bangles can be flagged as everything is being monitored.
