Many Indians want to get U.S. citizenship because it offers better job opportunities, higher pay, good education, and excellent healthcare. U.S. citizenship also provides a stable political environment and strong legal protections, making it a valuable goal despite the long and tough process.
Good news for Indian Americans: The U.S. government is encouraging Green Card holders to apply for citizenship and register to vote in the upcoming presidential elections on November 5, 2024.

A Green Card shows that a person is a permanent resident of the U.S. Many Green Card holders are from Asian or Indian backgrounds.
Shekar Narasimhan from the AAPI Victory Fund advises Green Card holders who have been in the U.S. for five years to get their citizenship and register to vote. He suggests creating a WhatsApp group to remind friends to do the same.

He mentioned that under the Biden administration, it’s possible to get U.S. citizenship in about three weeks if you have been a Green Card holder for five years.
Narasimhan noted that Kamala Harris’s presidential candidacy is generating excitement among Indian Americans and others.

In 2022, there were 12.9 million Green Card holders in the U.S., with 9.2 million eligible for citizenship. About one million people get Green Cards each year. Although numbers dropped during the COVID-19 pandemic, they rose again in 2022.
In 2023, India was the second-largest country for new U.S. citizens, with 59,000 Indians gaining citizenship. According to an annual report by USCIS, nearly 870,000 foreign nationals became U.S. citizens that year, with Mexico being the top source country.
