
Vijay Sethupathi’s Maharaja faced heavy criticism for its portrayal of sexual assault, with many pointing fingers at the film for its disturbing and unnecessary depiction.
However, some argue that the real issue lies with Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan. Director TJ Gnanavel’s handling of the topic was seen as overly explicit, showing the assault multiple times, which many felt was unwarranted and sympathy driven.

Meanwhile, Pani, a Malayalam film directed by actor Joju George in his directorial debut, also found itself in controversy after receiving backlash for a rape scene. Many questioned how it was even okayed by the censor board.
Despite being praised for her role, Abhinaya, who portrayed the survivor in the film, shared her perspective on the controversy. She was asked about the handling of the scene, which a critic had described as “immature and objectifying.”

Abhinaya, however, defended the director’s creative choices, stating that it was entirely Joju George’s decision as the director, given his vast experience in the industry.
She emphasized that, as an actor, she trusted the director’s vision and had no further comments on the matter.

The explicit rape scene continues to receive backlash from the audience, especially after its release on OTT.
It’s still shocking how Joju George’s Pani never got much flak from the critics like Maharaja during its theatrical run.
