The Robert Eggers’ adaptation of ‘Nosferatu’ is now streaming on Jio Hotstar and it is a news to rejoice for horror fans. But there is a problem. It looks like Jio Hotstar had brought the problematic theatrical cut itself to OTT.
There is heavy censorship of the movie and the nude scenes are cut out. The nude scenes constitute very integral parts of the storyline and omitting them is a very problematic decision.

Also, the platform has decided to show the same anti-smoking advertisements that are used in theaters. They block the view and are extremely distracting to watch in the middle of the film. The platform also could not show a better quality than 1080p.

Jio Hotstar’s decision to butcher a film like Nosferatu will prove to be a painful experience for horror fans. A film like this should be experienced as the director intended. And people were excited for the OTT release because the Indian theatrical version did not do justice to it.
Now OTTs are going the same way and it is concerning for the integrity of cinema. These are the reasons behind people resorting to piracy. OTT platforms shying away to show the original versions of movies will work for their own doom.
