
People on social media are speculating that Netflix and Prime Video are trying to become TV channels now. With more TV like content they are trying to migrate the audiences from TV to OTT but in the process they are changing and challenging the fundamentals of OTT too.
They say, with reality shows and more and more TV serials acquired by Prime and Netflix, the platforms are racing to deliver TV style content to cater to the audience.

But it is not entirely true. While the platforms have tried to encapsulate some of the elements of traditional TV, they cannot entirely replace it or become like it.
No OTT platform can offer what traditional TV does and TV has a completely different DNA. Selecting the show of one’s choice and getting one episode every day in scheduled time is very different. Now that people are shifting from TV to OTT, sometimes they express their concerns with the OTT platforms not totally understanding their demands.

With more content acquired by the platforms, more audiences will be attracted to them. The budget and quality of TV soaps have a huge gap with that of the platforms. Netflix’s Heeramandi reportedly having a budget of 200 crores, managed to make 20 million views. There are serials in India that have far more following even with a lesser budget. So it will probably be a long time before the OTT platforms finally replace TV.
