The Indian film industry has seen the definition of a blockbuster change rapidly over the last decade.
What was once a rare feat—crossing ₹1000 crore worldwide—has now become the benchmark for the biggest hits.
This is not just about growing audience numbers but also the expanding reach and ambition of Indian cinema.
Every year a few films try to join this elite club but only a select few make it.
Looking back Dangal and Baahubali 2 set the tone for this new era in 2017.
Then KGF 2 and RRR in 2022, Jawan and Pathaan in 2023, Kalki 2898 AD and Pushpa 2: The Rule in 2024.
Each of these films brought something new to the table whether it was star power, new storytelling or visual effects.
Their success has raised the bar for what audiences expect and what filmmakers aim for.
As for 2025 the race for the ₹1000 crore club is still on.
The biggest grosser of the year so far is the historical drama Chhaava starring Vicky Kaushal which has done well at the box office.
But according to the numbers Chhaava has collected around ₹783-807 crore worldwide which is good but not in the ₹1000 crore club.
Other big releases like Housefull 5 and Raid 2 have done well but none have crossed the ₹1000 crore mark.
So as of now 2025 has not seen a film join the ₹1000 crore club.
It remains to be seen if any upcoming film will break that ceiling and continue the trend. The trade bets on WAR 2 and Coolie to become 1000-crore grossers if they match expectations.
For now, the benchmark set by the earlier blockbusters stands unbroken reminding us how rare and special such success is.
