Star Hero Got Too Greedy With His Film?

The OTT market has changed significantly in recent years. Compared to a few years ago, many streaming platforms have reduced the amount they pay for film rights.

Because of this shift, several filmmakers are now exploring alternative ways to release and monetise their films. A recent example often discussed is the strategy used by Aamir Khan.

The actor earlier released Sitare Zameen Par, which is the sequel to the iconic film Tare Zameen Par. The movie was produced by Aamir Khan himself and released last year.

At the box office, the film did not generate massive revenue. However, it reportedly performed well enough to recover its production costs.

After the theatrical run, an unusual distribution decision followed. Aamir Khan chose to release the film on YouTube for a small viewing fee.

This move was seen as experimental because major Bollywood stars rarely release films on YouTube through a pay to watch model.

The exact revenue generated from the YouTube release has not been officially revealed. However, industry observers believe the film may have earned a reasonable amount through the platform.

Now, nearly a year after the YouTube release, reports suggest the film has been sold to SonyLIV. The movie could soon begin streaming on the OTT platform.

If confirmed, the deal with SonyLIV may also bring additional revenue for the makers.

Some social media users have commented that Aamir Khan may have tried to maximise profits by first releasing the film on YouTube and later selling it to an OTT platform.

However, others point out that cinema is also a business. As the producer of Sitare Zameen Par, Aamir Khan has the right to decide the best strategy for distributing and monetising the film.
