Akshay Kumar has often faced debates over nationality and patriotism. The nickname “Canadian Kumar” was used against him for years, sparking questions about his right to star in patriotic films or comment on national issues.
He had taken Canadian citizenship during a difficult period in his career. However, no matter what he achieved professionally or through philanthropy, critics continued to question his identity.
In August 2023, Akshay clarified matters by announcing that he had surrendered his Canadian passport and obtained an Indian one. This step was meant to put an end to the controversy.
