Alia Bhatt is reportedly in talks for the Bollywood remake of the Hollywood film The Housemaid. The project is said to be titled The Housewife and is creating strong buzz online.
The original film, The Housemaid, starred Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney. It emerged as one of the notable adult crime thrillers of 2025.
According to a blind shared on Reddit forum r/BollyBlindsNGossip, Alia Bhatt is likely to play a role similar to Amanda Seyfried’s character. The remake is expected to take inspiration from the original story.
Reports suggest that another younger actress may be cast for the role similar to Sydney Sweeney’s character. A relatively lesser known actor could be chosen for the husband’s role.
There is also speculation that Rajkumar Rao is in talks to play the husband. If confirmed, this could mark a fresh onscreen pairing.
The title The Housewife is said to be chosen deliberately. It shifts the focus more towards Alia Bhatt’s character rather than presenting it as a two female lead story.
This approach may change the narrative emphasis. The story could focus more on the housewife’s emotional journey and relationships instead of the housemaid’s role.
The makers are also planning to add desi elements. This is aimed at making the story more relatable for Bollywood audiences.
In the original, Sydney Sweeney’s character had bold scenes and a controversial track. This has led to discussions about how the remake will handle such elements.
There are questions about whether the film will retain the same tone or adapt it for Indian audiences. The creative approach will be key to its reception.
The project is yet to be officially confirmed. Reports indicate that its progress may depend on the performance of Alia Bhatt’s upcoming film Alpha.
Alia Bhatt may also co produce the film under Eternal Sunshine Productions with Panorama Studios. If finalised, the film could begin shooting between August and September 2026.
Currently, Alia Bhatt is working on Alpha with Sharvari Wagh and Love & War with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
