Aamir & Salman’s Film: Worse Than Original?

The re-release of Rajkumar Santoshi’s cult comedy Andaz Apna Apna failed to make any strong impact at the box office, indicating the absence of vigorous promotion and current subdued cinema-going fervour in the nation.

Even with the film’s classic status and starring cast featuring Aamir Khan and Salman Khan, the re-release raked approximately Rs. 90 lakhs in its opening weekend, about half a crore less than its original 1994 opening of Rs. 92 lakhs.

The initial run ended on a low note of Rs. 5.29 crore nett, and with the present trends and below-par screen count, it seems highly unlikely that the re-release will do better than that, even though ticket prices are currently in the region of 20 times higher.

Competition from recent releases such as Jaat, Kesari Chapter 2, and Ground Zero has further limited its box office potential, splitting audience attention and show availability.

Whereas the movie did better than a re-release of the likes of Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Karan Arjun, it also fails compared to successful re-releases like the likes of Veer Zaara, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, and Kal Ho Naa Ho.

The humour in the movie, along with characters, have transcended time, but the generation that has been born since does not seem aware or less passionate, leading to the subdued reception.

Andaz Apna Apna’s re-release has failed to cash in on its cult appeal, with respectable collections suggesting nostalgia alone is not enough to bring in big audiences in today’s competitive and conservative cinema climate.
