Anurag Kashyap recently spoke about the impact of Netflix shelving his ambitious project. He said the decision affected him deeply, both mentally and physically. The filmmaker revealed that the experience eventually led to a heart attack and time spent in rehab.
According to Anurag Kashyap, the project was an adaptation of Maximum City by Suketu Mehta. Netflix had initially approved the series. He reportedly expanded it into a detailed 900-page script after receiving the green light.
He claimed that Netflix later backed out without proper communication. This left him in a prolonged state of uncertainty. The lack of clarity took a serious emotional toll on him over time.
Anurag described the loss of the project as extremely personal. He even compared it to a miscarriage. The emotional distress reportedly led to declining health, excessive drinking, and the need for rehabilitation.
The shelving occurred during a period when streaming platforms became cautious. This followed controversies around shows like Tandav starring Saif Ali Khan. Anurag said he never received an official explanation for the decision.
He speculated that the subject matter or the industry climate may have influenced Netflix’s move. Despite the setback, he eventually returned to work. Filmmaker Zoya Akhtar invited him to appear in Made in Heaven, marking a turning point.
