Anurag Kashyap being honest as always has given a reality check to both Bollywood and the streaming platforms that promised to change the face of Indian entertainment. When Netflix released Sacred Games and Lust Stories, Kashyap was hopeful of a new era of bold and original storytelling. But now he is disappointed.
In an interview Kashyap said, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are making content that is even “worse than TV”-safe, bland and made to not offend anyone. He attributes this to the platforms’ obsession with numbers.
With India’s massive population, these companies have become number crazy and algorithms are deciding what gets made. This is resulting in shows that never take risks or spark any conversation.
Kashyap has experienced this himself, Netflix cancelled Sacred Games Season 3 and his adaptation of Maximum City after controversies. He is frustrated and disillusioned.
He is also critical of Bollywood calling it “creatively bankrupt”. The traditional star system is dying, originality is missing and the industry is lost.
But Kashyap believes hitting rock bottom could be the turning point for change. He has found new inspiration in Kerala where bold films are being made and has shifted his focus to South Indian cinema.
His message is clear, for Indian films and shows to truly stand out they have to break free from algorithms and start taking creative risks again.
