Anurag Kashyap’s Urine Remark Sparks Outrage

Anurag Kashyap has always been an outspoken director, whether through his films or his social media, he never hesitates to express what he believes in.

Amid the controversy surrounding the release of Phule, Kashyap raised his voice about the increasing number of films in recent times that have been censored or suppressed for addressing the prevailing caste system in India.

In a long Instagram post, Kashyap voiced his concerns. A user responded to the post saying, ‘Brahmins are your fathers. The more you mess with them, the more they will burn you.’

To this, the director replied, saying he would ‘urinate on Brahmins.’ This comment sparked massive outrage, especially among upper-caste communities who were unable to digest the statement.

In his post, Kashyap pointed out that films like Dhadak 2 and Santosh, which addressed caste issues in India, were being banned under the pretence that there is no caste system in the country, as claimed by the government.

However, the backlash that followed his comment only served to highlight how deeply rooted the caste system still is, and how harmful it continues to be.

Just because the government refuses to acknowledge or allow others to address caste issues doesn’t mean the problem will disappear.

After his controversial remark, Kashyap began receiving a lot of hate, which escalated into rape threats directed at his daughter.

This forced the filmmaker to issue a statement, one that wasn’t quite an apology in the traditional sense, but delivered in his signature style.

In his statement, he said that none of his actions are worth the death and rape threats that his family or colleagues were receiving because of him.

Ironically, Kashyap pointed out that the same Brahmins who constantly preach about sanskar and righteousness were the ones sending the most vile rape threats.

Amid all this controversy, Phule, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, is set to hit theatres next week on April 25, after undergoing several cuts.
