Vishek Chauhan, the owner of Roopbani Cinema, a single-screen theatre based in Purnia, Bihar, is making headlines on the internet due to an unconventional yet lucrative offer for moviegoers.
He has put forward an offer, saying that whoever deposits their phones before entering the hall will get free popcorn to enjoy the film.
Their slogan — “Phone Karo Deposit, And Apko Milega Popcorn Bilkul Free!” resonates with the public, who seem intrigued by this brand new perspective to cut down on distractions during movie time.
His exact words were, “It’s not about making money—it’s about spreading awareness against excessive digital usage and how it’s affecting our children. We need more people-to-people interaction and to make moviegoing a communal experience again.”
He further continued, “The larger point I want to make is that digital addiction is isolating folks and creating digital divides. Cinemas, on the other hand, are unifiers that bring us closer to each other…
…Try watching a film without your phone a few times, and you won’t need an incentive to do it.”
Social media users seem very excited about this initiative, with many highlighting the importance of building real-life relationships rather than seeking social media validation.
One user said, “Making people fall back in love with the movie-going experience is crucial at this point of time. Great job!”
Another showed scepticism as he wrote, “It’s a bold move, but will people really give up their phones?”
With Vishek’s unorthodox move being appreciated all around, the public is excited to see if it will succeed in changing people’s mindset, bringing ‘the cinema experience’ back to its glory days.
