Bollywood Mediocre or Audience is the Real Problem?

Every few months, online debates resurface claiming Bollywood no longer makes good films. To some extent, this criticism holds weight, as the quality of several mainstream commercial releases has declined. However, in an industry producing hundreds of films yearly, dismissing all output as poor is an oversimplification.

In the rush to cater to shrinking attention spans, many films now rely on constant visual noise and loud music. These elements aim to keep viewers engaged without demanding focus. As a result, several films feel designed for passive viewing rather than immersive storytelling.

This trend has led to the perception that Bollywood cinema has become largely mediocre. Yet, beyond phone-friendly spectacles, a richer cinematic space continues to exist. That space often goes unnoticed amid aggressive promotions and high-decibel marketing campaigns.

Away from mainstream glare, meaningful films quietly find appreciation among niche audiences. OTT platforms sometimes offer access to this parallel world, though discovery often remains accidental. Soon after, attention is pulled back by heavily marketed commercial releases.

In recent years, films like Laapataa Ladies, Girls Will Be Girls, Kill, Tumbbad, and Homebound have received critical acclaim. Despite strong storytelling and positive reception, these films struggle for visibility due to the dominance of big-ticket releases.

Bollywood has also delivered notable short films that remain widely accessible. Neeraj Ghaywan’s Juice, Adam J. Graves’s Anuja, and Jyoti Kapur Das’s Chutney stand out among many quality efforts. Platforms like Royal Stag Barrel Select Shorts and Terribly Tiny Tales regularly release such work on YouTube.

Indian OTT platforms further host powerful documentaries, including The Elephant Whisperers on Netflix. These projects highlight the industry’s creative depth beyond theatrical releases.

Bollywood is not limited to mediocrity alone. With curiosity and effort, a diverse body of meaningful cinema emerges, offering far more substance than mainstream noise suggests.
