Bollywood has leaned heavily on sequels in the post pandemic phase. Several follow ups to earlier hits have been announced. A few projects have already gone on floors.
However, the mixed box office results of recent sequels have sparked debate. Industry observers are questioning whether audiences still want repeated stories. Many feel fresh subjects may offer better long term value.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that the success of an original film naturally attracts viewers to its sequel. He cited Kesari 2 as an example. According to him, even if a sequel underperforms, the brand recall plays a role in drawing initial attention.
Taran also stressed that content remains the deciding factor. A weak script cannot survive only on franchise value. He believes makers must prioritise strong storytelling over brand extension.
Exhibitor Akshay Rathie echoed a similar view. He said that content ultimately drives footfalls. Without emotional connection or entertainment value, even a sequel struggles to sustain.
Actor Saurabh Shukla offered a different perspective. He said marketing teams often treat films as properties. In contrast, actors view each film as a creative work rather than a commercial extension.
Online users have also shared strong opinions. Many believe sequels should be made only if the original had an open ending. They argue that forcing continuations can dilute the impact of the first film.
Some viewers even questioned large franchises like the YRF Spy Universe. They feel repetition may reduce excitement. Trade experts, however, maintain that a well written and larger than life entertainer can still succeed.
With several sequels lined up in the coming years, the industry faces a crucial test. The performance of these films may shape Bollywood’s future strategy. Whether the trend continues or shifts towards original stories remains to be seen.
