Sexist Jokes in OTT Era? Will Audience Accept?

The surprise announcement of the fourth Masti film, titled Reverse Masti, reuniting Riteish Deshmukh, Vivek Oberoi, and Aftab Shivdasani, has sparked a wave of buzz online.

This unexpected revival puts a fresh spin on the franchise’s signature adult comedy, and this time, it’s the women stepping into the spotlight, with the plot revolving around female protagonists caught in extramarital affairs.

While the news has generated a significant buzz, it’s not exactly in good humor. Fans are wondering, does this brand of humor still have a place in theaters, or have the world and the audiences moved on?

The original Masti film release back in 2004 was a box office surprise with its crude themes and novel adult-only comedy. A film like Masti was enjoyed back then, but times have changed.

Many believe the franchise’s reliance on sexist humor, where infidelity is overutilized for cheap laughs and women are reduced to caricatures, hasn’t aged well.

Social media users also highlighted that people are continuously engaging with explicit content on the internet, and the films sexual shock value that once drew audiences to the theaters has completely evaporated.

Some users also questioned why anyone would pay hefty ticket prices to watch a sleaze-driven comedy when OTT platforms and the internet offer far more, often for free.

The franchise’s novelty has worn off, and what remains is a formulaic comedy that many find embarrassing. This was the same reason why Housefull 5 also failed to live up to its franchise’s name.

Many believe that the franchise will have to reinvent itself with smarter writing and genuine humor for it to genuinely make a mark in today’s cinematic landscape.

The audience of 2025 expects more than recycled sexual innuendoes and stereotypes; they demand comedy that’s clever, relevant, and respectful of the audience that engages with it.
