Aamir Khan often speaks about cinema, storytelling, and industry growth. Recently, some fans have questioned the quality of his recent work. The criticism covers both his acting choices and projects he has produced.
In a recent interview, Aamir Khan spoke about India’s shortage of cinema theatres. He asked audiences to imagine how things could have been if Dhurandhar had released on 15,000 screens. According to him, this would be possible only with stronger theatrical infrastructure like China.
However, fans and theatre owners were quick to respond. They pointed out that none of Aamir Khan’s recent films released in more than 9,000 cinema halls. This is despite India already having that level of screen capacity.
They cited films such as Happy Patel, Laapataa Ladies, and Sitaare Zameen Par. These films had limited releases focused mainly on metro cities. As a result, they had little impact on the wider exhibition sector.
People from the theatrical business believe India can build the infrastructure Aamir Khan envisions. They say it can be achieved quickly if there is steady demand. However, this demand depends on consistent and widely appealing content.
They question how many films actually perform like Dhurandhar. According to them, very few films draw strong footfalls across cities, towns, and villages where theatres already exist.
Cinema halls require heavy investment and high operating costs. Fans argue that the industry currently delivers only three or four films a year that significantly boost theatre earnings. This is not enough for long-term sustainability.
While many agree that India needs more theatres, the bigger issue is content supply. They feel the Hindi film industry must focus on powerful, audience-driven films. Only then can theatre expansion become realistic and sustainable.
