Gustaakh Ishq: Unexpected Competition for Dhanush?

Bollywood rarely delivers a film that makes viewers feel poetic once the credits roll. But audiences say Manish Malhotra’s Gustaakh Ishq has managed to do exactly that.

At its heart, Gustaakh Ishq is a love story. It is set in Old Delhi and features Vijay Varma, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Naseeruddin Shah. The film is directed by Vibhu Puri.

The story follows Nawabuddin Saifuddin Rahman, played by Vijay. He is trying to save his father’s printing press in Old Delhi. He becomes a disciple of a retired poet named Aziz, played by Shah. Rahman then falls in love with Aziz’s daughter, Minni, a schoolteacher played by Fatima. He is torn between love and honouring his mentor, and this choice could change his life.

Audiences who watched the film in theatres felt it was meant for the big screen. Its visual style and emotional depth reminded many of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s storytelling.

Viewers described the film as soulful and comforting. Some even said Bollywood often treats romance like fast food, but this film feels like slow cooked dal makhani with aloo paratha. Rich, warm, and heartfelt.

Even before release, the songs hinted at the film’s vibe. Vishal Bhardwaj’s music added more charm and emotion, touching both the characters and the audience.

Fans praised the performances for being raw, honest, and tender. They felt these qualities had been missing in recent years. The film never feels pretentious, nor does it force Urdu for effect. Instead, it builds its world slowly and lovingly, leaving a lasting impact.

Today, Gustaakh Ishq released along with Tere Ishq Mein starring Dhanush and Kriti Sanon. Both films offer very different tones. But if you want to step into Purani Dilli and find the feeling of “kuchh pehle jaise,” this film may be the right choice.
