“If Kashmir Files Disturbed You, This Will Destroy You”

A clip of filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri’s interview is resurfacing on the internet.

In the viral clip, Vivek talks passionately about his upcoming project, “Delhi Files,” stating that “If Kashmir Files disturbed you… then this film will destroy you,” sparking a fresh controversy and triggering debates.

The film, which is based on the events of Direct Day Action, referring to the shocking communal riots that occurred in Kolkata on August 16, 1946, takes pages from history, and people cannot help but speculate whether some of them might be left out.

Vivek has been previously critiqued for weaponizing historical events to fuel current tensions.

The Kashmir Files faced significant criticism from historians and journalists, many of whom argued that the portrayal of events was exaggerated and presented without sufficient context.

Despite Vivek’s insistence on presenting “real history” to the public, his claims lack sufficient evidence to support them.

Vivek stated in the interview that the incident caused over 40,000 deaths, but the internet quickly refuted it with historical archives stating there were probably between 4,000 and 10,000 casualties.

Cinema influences people unlike any other medium; a film that tackles historical events—especially ones rooted in Hindu-Muslim conflict— demands nuance and responsibility.

Reframing pre-independence events to appeal to modern ideology not only distorts the past but also fuels existing animosity among communities.

In times when communal harmony is delicate, it is important that history is revisited with sensitivity and a commitment to understanding, rather than in ways that may unintentionally provoke tensions.
