Director’s Viral Interviews Backfiring Instead of Helping?

Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film Main Vaapas Aaunga is scheduled to release in theatres next month. However, the filmmaker is currently attracting attention for his recent interviews rather than the film itself. Several of his comments about past projects have gone viral online.

During these interviews, Imtiaz Ali reflected on some of his most discussed films and creative decisions. Many of the conversations focused on movies that later achieved cult popularity among audiences. His remarks have triggered mixed reactions across social media platforms.

One of his widely discussed statements was about Tamasha. Imtiaz claimed that the lead character inspired many people to leave their jobs and rethink their lives. He also spoke about Love Aaj Kal 2 and described the film as an unsuccessful experiment in hindsight.

Another interview clip that gained attention involved Deepika Padukone and the casting process of Cocktail. Imtiaz Ali revealed that Deepika Padukone was initially approached for Diana Penty’s role. According to him, he later advised her to choose the other character instead.

The filmmaker explained that he believed Deepika Padukone had been associated with a good-girl image for a long time. His comments quickly sparked discussions online, with some viewers initially interpreting them as indirect criticism of the actress. The debate soon gained momentum across entertainment pages.

Imtiaz Ali later attempted to clarify the matter through an Instagram Story. He praised Deepika Padukone and stated that his earlier comments were made in a light-hearted manner. Despite the clarification, discussions around his interviews have continued online.

Many social media users are now questioning the purpose behind these repeated interview revelations. Some viewers feel the strategy may be aimed at creating attention for Main Vaapas Aaunga ahead of release. Others believe the filmmaker should focus more on discussing the new project itself.

A section of online users also wondered why Imtiaz Ali was revisiting old creative decisions years later. Some questioned why he was now openly admitting mistakes that he allegedly recognised much earlier. These reactions have added to the ongoing online debate.

Trade experts currently believe Main Vaapas Aaunga has limited buzz before release. Industry observers feel the promotional campaign may require a stronger strategy to build wider audience interest. Whether the ongoing interview discussions ultimately help the film remains uncertain for now.
