Karan Johar recently opened up about a tough memory from his early career. He was working as an assistant director on Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at the time. The incident took place during the shoot of the popular song Mehendi Laga Ke Rakhna.
He recalled the episode in a recent interview. According to Karan, a production error caused a shortage of red scarves meant for background dancers. The mistake created tension on the set.
To avoid delay, Karan suggested a temporary solution. He asked the dancers to keep one hand in their pocket to manage the visual gap. However, the decision did not go down well.
Legendary choreographer Saroj Khan noticed the change immediately. She was known for her strict discipline and eye for perfection. She reportedly confronted Karan and demanded that the missing scarves be arranged without delay.
Saroj Khan even warned that the shoot could be halted if the costumes were not fixed. Karan described the moment as frightening and emotionally overwhelming. He said he felt that she never truly warmed up to him after that.
The episode highlights the pressure on large scale film sets. Even small logistical errors can affect schedules. It also shows the high standards Saroj Khan maintained throughout her career.
Saroj Khan passed away in 2020 and remains one of Indian cinema’s most respected choreographers. Meanwhile, Karan Johar has grown into a leading filmmaker and producer. He is currently working on new projects including Nagzilla and Chand Mera Dil.
