Furious KJo Defends The ‘Best Nepo Project Yet’

Karan Johar is facing a lot of backlash online after his angry reply to a comment spiraled into a volatile debate around nepotism and industry privilege.

In his recent Instagram post, Karan praised Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara as the best film of his career and also praised the debut actors Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda for their performances.

Under this post, one social media user commented, “A gaya nepo kid ka daijaan,” in response to which Karan frustratingly bashed the user by accusing him of fostering negativity.

Karan also went on to call this person jobless and asked them to appreciate those who actually do. This event in itself was enough for haters to troll Karan.

Critics and fans alike agreed that the comment affected Karan because there’s truth to it. People started drawing parallels as to how both lead actors of Saiyaara, Ahaan and Aneet, have ties with the industry.

While there’s no denying that the actors are talented, the issue here is how they’re presented. Before the release, these actors were labelled as fresh talents; however, no fresh talents outside of Bollywood would get such an opportunity unless they had strong industry connections.

Fans mentioned how major production houses launch star kids as if they’re trying to complete monthly targets irrespective of their screen presence or talents.

Karan especially pops up in the nepotism conversations, as he has played favoritism on multiple occasions and has a reputation for only working with star kids in most of his projects.

Even some of the big stars in the industry today, like Alia Bhatt, Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, and Ananya Panday, owe their successes to the strong backing they got from the industry.

Karan’s defenders, on the other hand, believe his outspoken defense comes from a genuine belief that he’s promoting good and talented people in the industry.

The divide over nepotism won’t be resolved unless big names in the industry make space and support talents that aren’t familiar with the industry but show true potential.

It’s high time that we get to see artists who’ve earned their space on the silver screen and not just good-looking star kids who’re all show and no substance.
