Karan Johar is reportedly planning a modern day remake inspired by his classic film Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. However, reports suggest that finding the right cast has become a major challenge for the filmmaker.
The original film featured an iconic ensemble cast. It included Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, along with Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor were also part of the film.
The combination of veteran actors and rising stars played a key role in the film’s success. This has made the casting process for the new project more complicated.
According to reports, the script for the upcoming film is a reworked version of Takht. While the basic concept remains connected to that story, the narrative has reportedly been rewritten as a modern NRI family drama.
Karan Johar is said to be aiming to recreate the iconic poster style associated with Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. For this reason, he is looking for actors who can match the scale and appeal of the original cast.
Initially, the filmmaker reportedly considered Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor for a role similar to the character played by Shah Rukh Khan in the original film. However, reports suggest that both actors are currently not interested in the project.
The female lead of the film is reportedly finalised with Alia Bhatt. At the moment, however, the team is still searching for a major star to fill the central male role.
For the younger couple in the story, Ahaan Pandey and Aneet Padda were reportedly among the first choices. However, scheduling conflicts may affect their availability.
There were also discussions about Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol appearing in roles similar to those played by Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan in the original film. Reports suggest that both actors may not join the project due to scheduling constraints.
Meanwhile, the writers are reportedly continuing to work on the script. Some changes are also said to have been made to the role inspired by Shah Rukh Khan’s character.
It remains to be seen whether Karan Johar will be able to assemble a star studded cast for the film. The project continues to attract attention because of its connection to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.
