The film industry is taking a different route it seems, a movie like “Dhadak 2”, despite having no big stars attached to it, has secured a theatrical release, while “Sarzameen”, starring a relatively known cast, has found its way to OTT platforms.
Having actors like Tripti Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi who are mostly famous in OTTs as a cast of “Dhadak 2” it is more logical to put it on OTT platform, on the other hand “Sarzameen” was supposed to be Saif Ali Khan’s son Ibrahim Ali Khan’s theatrical debut.
The core reason behind this contrasting fate seems to be the brand value of “Dhadak”.
The 2018 movie, was a remake of the Marathi super hit blockbuster “Sairaat” and managed to strike an emotional bond with audiences, specifically with its music.
Currently, “Dhadak 2” is walking on the same path, being an adaptation of one of the most famous Tamil films “Pariyerum Perumal” it is getting a wide theatrical release.
The movie “Pariyerum Perumal” won several awards and was an audience favorite.
Now, with Karan Johar and Dharma Production, “Dhadak 2” seems to have gained confidence purely on the strength of its powerful subject matter and the good performance of the original movie, despite not having good actors on board.
This also highlights the changing scenario of Indian cinema where content is slowly starting to overpower stardom.
Meanwhile, “Sarzameen”, despite having action and drama elements, perhaps lacked the buzz or a strong pull that could magnate the audience towards theaters. Thus, OTT became its natural home.
To sum it up, Karan Johar’s decision reflects his belief in the story and the emotion filled nostalgia of “Dhadak”, which “Dhadak 2” can offer.
It’s a gamble, but one that could pay off if audiences value substance over celebrity.
