Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor recently shared her views on the growing trend of violence driven films in the industry. She spoke about the issue during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India ahead of International Women’s Day.
During the discussion, Kareena raised concerns about the increasing focus on hyper masculine storytelling. According to her, many recent films highlight thrillers, crime, gore, and violence instead of emotions and joy.
She joined Kalyani Priyadarshan and Ananya Panday for the conversation. Kareena said modern films seem to prioritise shock value rather than traditional Bollywood elements like colour, music, love, and romance.
Kareena explained that cinema should offer stronger roles for women and more diverse storytelling. She said meaningful scripts with substantial characters are necessary for the industry’s creative growth.
She also pointed out that audience choices play a major role in shaping cinema trends. Kareena said viewers ultimately decide the direction of films rather than producers alone.
According to her, the trend of high intensity films has been influenced by the box office success of movies like Animal, Jawan, Pathaan, and Dhurandhar. These films often aim to deliver sensational moments through action and violence.
Kareena admitted that the trend sometimes worries her, though she believes it may only be temporary. She added that large scale spectacle is slowly overshadowing emotional storytelling that once defined Bollywood.
Kalyani Priyadarshan also supported the discussion and emphasised the need for more female writers in the industry. She said diverse voices can help bring balanced storytelling and stronger emotional narratives.
Meanwhile, Ananya Panday described the current trend as repetitive. She noted that filmmakers often rely on proven formulas instead of experimenting with fresh creative ideas.
Kareena Kapoor is now preparing for her upcoming film Daayra. The gritty crime drama is directed by Meghna Gulzar and also stars Prithviraj Sukumaran.
Following the interview, some social media users speculated that Kareena’s comments indirectly targeted masculine action films ahead of Dhurandhar 2. However, many fans supported her views and said emotional stories should not disappear because of a few high action blockbusters.
