Another PIL Filed: Unnecessary Attention to BO Flop?

The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has entered fresh legal trouble after a public interest litigation was filed in the Kerala High Court. The petition seeks removal of the words Kerala or Kerelam from the film’s title.

Reports say the PIL was filed by two individuals, including a retired social science teacher and a Muslim woman advocate practicing in the High Court. They argue that the title damages the state’s image. The petition also claims it could promote communal disharmony.

Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the sequel released on February 27, 2026. The High Court had earlier lifted an interim stay imposed due to concerns over divisive and unverified claims about religious conversions.

Despite strong pre release buzz and controversy, the film struggled at the box office. Early estimates suggest it earned around Rs 9 crore during its opening weekend. The numbers fell short of expectations.

Trade analysts predict a lifetime collection of around Rs 20 to 25 crore. This performance marks it as a flop. In comparison, its predecessor collected over Rs 240 crore despite facing similar polarised reactions.

The sequel’s weak performance has sparked debate about the continued legal and public attention. Some observers question whether the film still holds significant influence. Others believe the issue goes beyond commercial success.

As the PIL moves forward, the case reflects how polarising content often dominates headlines. Legal challenges and public outrage can sustain discussion. Whether this impacts the film further remains to be seen.
