Every industry goes through phases of reinvention and crisis but the divide between Hindi and South Indian cinema is hard to ignore.

While Bollywood once set the template for mainstream Indian storytelling, it’s now being criticized for losing its depth.

This has given South Indian films—often with stars unknown to the North Indian audience—to dominate the box office and capture the national imagination.

Javed Akhtar recently said that Hindi cinema has become disconnected from its roots. Many Hindi filmmakers being second generation migrants in Mumbai are accused of “dreaming in English” and losing touch with the cultural specificity that made their stories work.

South Indian filmmakers on the other hand continue to work in their own regions and make films that speak directly to their local audience.

That’s what gives their films an edge even when their actors are unknown outside their states. There are exceptions—like rooted Hindi films like Udaan—but the trend is clear.

Bollywood’s focus on action and spectacle is coming at the cost of nuanced, three dimensional characters.

As South Indian cinema thrives by staying true to its roots perhaps it’s time for Hindi filmmakers to rediscover the power of local stories and genuine emotions rather than chasing formulaic blockbusters.
