Films Remake, Songs Remake: When Will This Stop?

A new number “Gori Hai Kalaiyan” in the film “Mere Husband Ki Biwi” has brought up again the question of how Bollywood is entering into remaking evergreen songs.

Sung by Badshah and Kanika Kapoor, this adaptation is done through the composition by Akshay & IP while it is set to the one originally sung and owned by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar.

Featuring Arjun Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar, and Rakul Preet, this song has all the marks of another impending hit-but at what cost?

It is no secret that Bollywood has an addiction to remakes. Old films, old songs—nothing is off-limits.

Some feel that the remixes are bringing legendary music to the young generation, but others feel that it is a lazy shortcut chocking creativity. Instead of new melodies and fresh storytelling, the industry seems stuck in a cycle of rehashing past glories.

In a way, the new version of ‘Gori Hai Kalaiyan’ still has the feel of the old one but at the same time, presents it in a contemporary style.

Director Mudassar Aziz wanted to catch the magic of those larger-than-life Bollywood song sequences we all love. While that is an acceptable approach, it also opens up a more significant question: Can we have a balance between nostalgia and the new?

At the end of the day, the audience holds the power. If people keep tuning in, Bollywood will keep churning out remakes.
