Online Hype Full, BO Dull: What Went Wrong for AK?

When Anurag Kashyap fans heard about his new film Nishaanchi hitting theatres, excitement was high. Many expected the movie to pull big numbers at the box office.

However, that excitement did not convert into collections. The film, which introduced Bal Thackeray’s grandson Aishvary Thackeray, could not even cross 1 crore in its three-day opening weekend.

On its first day, Nishaanchi earned just 25 lakh. The second day saw a rise of more than 50 percent with 39 lakh, but day 3 dropped again to 26 lakh, bringing the weekend total to 90 lakh.

Kashyap enjoys a huge cult following online, often praised as one of India’s most unique filmmakers. Yet, when it comes to supporting him in theatres, fans seem to be missing.

While Nishaanchi is not a flawless film, it is a compelling one. It mixes crime, comedy, and family drama in a way that feels both old-school and fresh.

Despite mixed reviews, from positive to critical, audiences have not turned up. One reason could be the clash with Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 3, a franchise film that collected 53.5 crore in the same three-day run.

The lack of flashy marketing also made it harder for Nishaanchi to compete. Some fans, and even Kashyap himself, believe that many still rely on piracy to watch his films, something that shaped his early cult status.

But fans must understand that real support means buying tickets and watching films in theatres. Social media praise is good, but it cannot replace box office numbers.
