Ramayana Bookings: ₹2,000 Tickets Trigger Massive Backlash

Advance bookings for Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana have finally started in India. While the national multiplex chains, including PVR INOX and Cinepolis, have already started the bookings, others are yet to open up.

The response has been good, as tickets worth Rs. 2 crore have been sold in the first 24 hours. While the numbers have not been as large as expected, the reason for the same is South India, where bookings are yet to open, specifically in the metro centres like Hyderabad, Chennai, and more.

As of now, advance bookings at the national chains are expected to cross the mark of 50,000 in the first 24 hours. This is the fourth-best record created after Pathaan, Jawan, and Dhurandhar 2, as all three sold almost 100,000 tickets in the same period.

Trade experts also stated that the low figure in the first 24 hours is not something to worry about since two weeks are left for release and by then, all the theatres will open bookings, leading to better numbers. Meanwhile, USA premiere advance sales have also been good, with tickets worth $348,114 sold so far.

While the excitement can be seen in the bookings, the ticket prices have raised concern at the same time. Netizens also believe that this is one of the reasons why the shows have not witnessed faster ticket sales in 24 hours compared to other blockbuster films.

A particular section of the audience pointed out the ticket price for the premium formats like IMAX, where one ticket is being sold for more than Rs. 1,000 or Rs. 2000. People wrote that a film like Ramayana can be watched by a big family and, unfortunately, the ticket prices are going to be a reason why families won’t be able to visit theatres.

A few people alleged that the makers are possibly not confident in the content and hence, they are trying to recover the budget in a short period and be on the safe side. However, some others have now requested the makers to lower the prices a little bit, making it affordable for big families.

The makers have not yet shared anything related to the high ticket prices. But it will be interesting to see if the magnum opus will witness a long run in the theatres despite the debate that has emerged over the pricing.
