“Star Not Above Law”: Court’s Warning for Ranveer

Ranveer Singh recently faced controversy after his speech at the 55th International Film Festival of India in Goa. During the event, he spoke about Kantara: Chapter 1 and praised Rishab Shetty. However, certain remarks from the stage triggered backlash.

While appreciating Shetty’s performance, Singh reportedly referred to a deity as a female ghost and mimicked a scene from the film. Several viewers felt the comments were disrespectful. Social media reactions intensified soon after the video surfaced.

A Bengaluru based advocate later filed a case against the actor. The matter reached court, and proceedings began. The controversy has since drawn attention from film circles and legal observers.

Justice M. Nagaprasanna observed that the reference to the depiction of Chamundi Devi and the mimicry had hurt community sentiments. He remarked that being a superstar does not place anyone above the law. The court stated that celebrities must be mindful of their words due to their influence.

At the same time, the court granted interim relief to Ranveer Singh on his plea to quash the criminal case. This relief is subject to his cooperation with the investigation. The state has been directed not to take coercive action until March 3, when the matter will be heard again.

Ranveer informed the court that his remarks were taken out of context. He said he had no intention of hurting religious beliefs and issued an apology. Despite this, the issue continues to spark debate, and many are watching how the case progresses.
